Creating a Decodable StoryWalk®

What’s better than walking, exercising, and reading a good story? Reading the story independently! Teach My Kid to Read partners with Whole Phonics to bring communities the first decodable StoryWalk®! Whole Phonics publishes engaging, whimsical decodable books so children can delight in practicing their early phonics skills using an explicit, systematic and cumulative approach proven to help all kids learn to read. Teach My Kid to Read creates innovative community programming to engage children and families in the process of learning to read.

A Mom teaching her daughter to pronounce the words

A Pig and His Wig is a decodable reader that includes several consonant sounds with a focus on the short i sound.  The story is about Tim the Pig who wants to wear a wig. The kids who are Tim’s owners do not think pigs can wear wigs. Tim shows the kids that anyone can wear a wig. The story builds early reading skills and teaches children that it’s OK to think outside the box, and it’s OK to be different.

Why Offer a Decodable StoryWalk®

A StoryWalk ®is fun and brings people together outside! Older kids can help younger kids read or kids can read the story independently. A StoryWalk® lends itself to a literacy event that promotes children’s literature and information about resources that help all kids learn to read. For libraries and schools that want to show the community how to help all kids learn to read, a StoryWalk® is a perfect way for the community to experience a decodable reader!
