Dr. Richard E. Schutz Walk for Community Literacy Solutions

Join us in Albany on October 1st at 10:00 at our little free library on Warren Street, followed by a Reading Extravaganza, or organize your own walk or run anyplace! It’s easy! Order your t-shirt, download the event brochure, and join us in Albany or gather your friends and family for your own walk or run!

All children have the right to learn to read. However, only two-thirds of fourth-graders are considered proficient, and the statistics are more dire for marginalized populations. For more kids to learn to read, we must support approaches that help the most amount of children become proficient—that’s equitable literacy solutions.

Teach My Kid to Read focuses on community literacy solutions, working with libraries and local communities to provide education and access to tools such as decodable books that support evidence-based instruction for all children.

About Dr. Richard E. Schutz

Dr. Richard E. Schutz “Dick” is the creator of Beginning Reading Instruction/Advanced Reading Instruction, better known as I See Sam. Sadly, Dr. Richard E. Schutz passed away in 2021. Dick was passionate about helping all kids learn to read, and he was Teach My Kid to Read’s most prominent supporter in our quest to help libraries and communities access the books for all children learning to read. Proceeds from this event enable Teach My Kid to Read to offer I See Sam for early literacy kits and bundles for communities and libraries.

Create Awareness!

Literacy affects everything, and it’s critical to create awareness about how many children struggle to read, why so many children struggle to read, and how we can help. Besides joining us on our walk in Albany, there are many ways to create awareness. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Work with your library to create awareness of Dyslexia and resources that help all kids learn to read in October or any month! Here’s a link to a poster to get started.
  • For the library display, visit our bookstore to order decodable books and books about literacy. Books sales benefit TMKTR and local bookstores!
  • Create a “pop-up” decodable StoryWalk on lawn signs to show the community what decodable books are. The StoryWalks work well as part of a literacy event.
  • Host a literacy event consisting of handouts, decodable books, and books of all kinds. Contact us at info@teachmykidtoread.org for access to handouts and recommended items.
  • Join our FB group to learn more about other ways to promote literacy and share your ideas.
